چکیده

This paper demonstrates how a recently reported shape-from-shading scheme can be used to extract topographic information from 2D intensity imagery (Worthington and Hancock, IEEE Trans. Pattern Anal. Mach. Intell. 21 (1999) 1250}1267). The shape-from-shading scheme has two important features which enhance the recovered surface description. Firstly, it uses a geometric update procedure which allows the image irradiance equation to be satis"ed as a hard constraint. This not only improves the data closeness of the recovered needle map, but also removes the necessity for extensive parameter tuning. Secondly, we use curvature information to impose topographic constraints on the recovered needle map. The topographic information is captured using the shape index of Koenderink and van Doorn (Image Vision Comput. 10 (1992) 557}565) and consistency is imposed using a robust error function. We show that the new shape-from-shading scheme leads to a meaningful topographic labelling of 3D surface structures. Moreover, the resulting topographic information proves to be useful in a simple histogram-based object recognition scheme. ( 2001 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Extraction of Depth Elevation Model (DEM) from High Resolution Satellite Imagery using Shape from Shading Approach

Shading information in satellite imagery will give user an immediate appreciation for the surface topography. In this paper, an attempt has been made to reconstruct 3D shape or Depth elevation model (DEM) of satellite imagery using Shape from Shading approach. Three widely used shape from shading algorithms – Pentland‟s Linear approach, Lee and Rosenfeld‟s approach and Horn‟s approach were used...

Object Recognition Using Shape-from-Shading

ÐThis paper investigates whether surface topography information extracted from intensity images using a recently reported shape-from-shading (SFS) algorithm can be used for the purposes of 3D object recognition. We consider how curvature and shape-index information delivered by this algorithm can be used to recognize objects based on their surface topography. We explore two contrasting object r...

Terrain Modeling in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images Using Shape-from-Shading

In this paper we introduce a new approach for recovering shape-from-shading (SFS) from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the terrain. Three contributions are proposed. Firstly, we show how the direction of surface normals is constrained by the geometry of the radar reflectivity cone. Second, we show how topographic features can be used as boundary constraints on the recovered surface nor...

A New Perspective in Shape from Shading from Sar Images

In this paper we propose a new technique for Shape from Shading (SfS) from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images based on fractals. In particular, the present paper shows that, introducing proper models both for surface and scattering mechanisms, it is possible to estimate with sufficient accuracy the underlying topography also with a very simple and low computational complexity inversion techn...
